Learning Objectives
The challenges of cardiovascular surgical services in the low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) are associated with competing priorities: the communicable (CDs) versus noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) as well as limited resources, prohibitively high surgical costs, affordability, accessibility and the current limited capacity. The surgeons practising in these low-volume units are faced with easily treatable congenital and acquired heart lesions that develop to become chronic, advanced and deadly diseases. Among the topics of the interactive discussions will be the concept of developing efficient high-volume regional centres of excellence to deliver low-cost cardiovascular services in the context of north-south cooperation. These centres would forge training and continuing educational programmes, develop regional networking among the heart teams in the context of south-south cooperation to enhance transfer of knowledge and improve patient management.
